BROADCAST JOURNALISM

I have noticed how videos are just as important as written articles; they both tell a story. Quality videos have the power of captivating an audience. My first video I ever created was just a year ago, during my junior year. I wanted videos to be added to our website.

During my first video creation, I enjoyed the recording process. I treated this process like I would with any other story that I was gathering to write. I created a general outline of the angle I wanted to obtain, wrote a list of interview questions and then took the time for a quality interview proceeded by any follow up questions.

Though the recording process came naturally, my biggest challenge was self teaching myself the editing process. It was my first-time using Adobe Premiere Pro. It took a lot of time with many trials and errors to learn the features of Premiere Pro. With many help videos, the other editors and I worked together to learn from each other, aspiring to create a fluid video.

Now, I know more about video creation. Though, it still takes time, I feel that I am more comfortable with creating a video from the initial interview to when it is published.

MY FIRST VIDEO

During my junior year, I collaborated with other editors to learn and create this video on senior Sophia Nordling, who was directing the school play.

The Process

Interview Questions

The other editor and I made a list of interview questions, just like any other interview, to ask Nordling while the camera was recording.

Clips

After recording, we split the video into different sections to edit. This took time, but allowed us to do voice overs, smooth transitions and adjust the audio of Nordling's voice to the background music, so her voice could still be heard.

Published Video

I am proud of my first published video. A story was told in a captivating way and I learned the basic process of recording, editing and publishing.

video improvements

Just like anything else, perfection takes time. From critiques, help videos and my peers, I grow in my skill. I learn more about developing videography. Below are published videos that I have been part in creating and what I would do to improve them now. All videos were collaborated with another editor.

My Videos

Girls Basketball 2022 Sports Promo

This was my first sports related video. The fast movements of the game made it harder for me to keep the clips in focus. My shaking hands did not positively contribute to this in anyway, as now I would make use of a tripod. I learned that, though the promo video was only a minute long, it is beneficial to film many clips throughout the game for a wider variety.

BFF Game

As part of a multimedia package, I created this video to contribute to the story on lifelong friendships. Looking back, I would significantly cut the length of this video. I can do this by deleting the response time between the question asked and the responses of the individuals, Cole and Stephen. Also, I would make use of a microphone to eliminate the background noise as well as the countdown to their answers.

Track 2022 Sports Promo

After already publishing three video and growing more comfortable with the basics of Premiere Pro, the editors and I wanted to make use of some of the effects. I think these added to video. Though, instead of only having practice clips, I would make use of clips that were taken at a track meet. Also, I would be more aware of the frame of the camera. This would allow full faces to be seen and no cut-off heads.
